What is Stump Removal?
Stump removal is the physical process of taking a stump, including the attached roots, out of the ground. This is performed entirely with an augur-like tool that bores a hole into the stump. There are stump killer chemicals available on the market that will claim to kill and “remove” your stump, but these simply break down the stump over time and do not remove the remains. Chemical stump removal is also much less eco-friendly than stump removal from a tree service professional, as chemicals can seep into the ground. You also will not have access to the raw material of the stump after it decays and breaks down, while a removed stump can be turned into mulch.
In Harrisonburg, stump removal is also different from stump grinding. Stump grinding can be useful in a number of situations, but it does not remove the root ball, meaning your stump may regrow before the remaining roots decompose. Stump removal is the only way to completely ensure that your removed tree will not grow back.
Why Get a Stump Removed
- Stumps can attract insects. A rotting stump makes a great home for termites, ants, and beetles. These pests will infest other plants and trees if left to their own devices, and if you’re not careful, they’ll end up in your house as well.
- They are not visually appealing. If you care about the appearance of your landscaping, a stump is usually an eyesore. You may even live in an HOA community with certain standards and rules about how long a tree stump can be left before it needs to be removed.
- Tree stumps are physical safety hazards. They can be a trip hazard for anyone walking in your lawn. If they are low to the ground, they may also be hard to see when you are mowing the lawn.
- A stump may cause property damage. Roots can still grow even if the tree is removed and could cause cracks in the foundation of your house, grow into sewer lines, and more. Oak trees have notoriously invasive root systems in Virginia, and if their stumps are close enough to any structures or utilities, you should absolutely have them removed.
- Nothing can be done in the stump’s space. You will not be able to plant new flower beds, another tree, or do any sort of remodeling project in the space where the stump still sits.
- Your stump could be diseased. If a tree was removed because it died of disease (or in an effort to stop disease spread), the stump could still contain that disease and pass it to other trees. Fungi also like to grow in old stumps and could pass diseases along to you, your family, pets, and other plants.
